Data Sculptures
Much of my work is about combining complex tools (machine learning, forecast-based financing, scientific forecasts) into humanitarian work… and it’s hard to capture people’s attention, or awaken people’s imagination, to think big. So I’ve started working with artists to tell quantitative stories turning data into somewhat beautiful objects.
POPULATION DYNAMICS
DataSculptures on demography for 20 countries (1950-2018), vividly showing the impact of wars, dictatorship, birth control, migration and more.
TOGO AND FLOODS
DataSculpture supporting our self-learning algorithm to predict floods for our project in the West African nation of Togo (which earned a global innovation award)
PACIFIC DISASTERS AND FINANCING
In collaboration with Vanuatu artists we built a 5 meters long sculpture about nature, extreme events, impacts and disaster risk financing in small island states in the Pacific.
